Mississippi is developing a way for people to have their driver’s license, vaccination card and other state-issued documents available in a smartphone wallet. The digital driver’s license, or mobile ID, could be available as soon as November.

The Secure Technology Alliance is recognizing the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) on the publication of the ISO/IEC 18013-5 International standard: Personal Identification – Mobile Driver’s License (mDL). The standard establishes essential, clear guidance and secure, interoperable interface specifications for the implementation and adoption of mDLs and mobile IDs.

Ontario’s digital identification program is scheduled to launch in late 2021. Residents will be able to have an electronic version of their trusted government ID, including driver’s licenses and health cards. The Canadian government highlights its safety and security benefits.

Residents in 8 states will soon be able to use Apple Wallet to show a digital copy of their ID or driver’s license at TSA checkpoints in participating airports.

Apple is working with several states across the country, which will roll out the ability for their residents to seamlessly and securely add their driver’s license or state ID to Wallet on their iPhone and Apple Watch. States include Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah.

More and more states are rolling out digital driver’s licenses, and experts see that trend continuing as federal standards take shape and citizens embrace a new way of cryptographically verifying identity.

Harmon’s has announced that it will soon be accepting mobile driver’s licenses for identification and purchases. The mobile driver’s license program (mDL) is a partnership created by the Utah Driver’s License Division and GET Group North America. It’s the first mobile license that complies with international standards and can be used globally.

Utah Community Credit Union in Provo is working with the Utah Department of Public Safety and Utah Driver’s License Division to test a mobile ID system with 100 members.

Like any project that requires participants to share sensitive data, the Utah system will be challenged to recruit more financial institutions to participate.

Many U.S. states are implementing mobile driver’s licenses (mDL) as an option for their citizens. In states that have involved businesses that rely on ID, a “Mobile ID ecosystem” is becoming reality as governments that issue ID cards and commercial entities that require ID cards discover the advantages of mDLs. Once accepted everywhere, like tap payments, citizens may have the option to leave their wallet at home and not carry a physical ID card that is easily lost, stolen, or misused.

The Utah Community Credit Union (UCCU) will be the state’s first financial institution to officially accept mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) as a legal form of digital ID for all banking transactions. The technology behind the new mDL was developed by GET Group North America and The Utah Driver License Division (DLD) and has now been deployed on a larger scale, following a successful pilot run over the first half of 2021.
