iOS 15 was supposed to include the first set of mobile driver’s licenses launched in partnership with 8 states. Now Apple’s mobile driver’s license launch is delayed. Late last year, various articles surfaced concerns about Apple’s contract with state governments, specifically regarding who was paying for them (governments, aka taxpayers) and who had control over the launch (Apple).

The Washington, DC city council has passed a new bill that will allow residents to use a digital ID in any situation where they would previously have had to present a physical ID card.

By this coming Easter, Greeks will be able to carry the downloaded full version of their digital IDs and mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) in digital wallets on their mobile phones. Meanwhile, Greek authorities have also announced that it is now possible to save the ID card alongside other documentation such as vaccination and diagnostic certificates in the COVID-free GR Wallet.

The Secure Technology Alliance announced in a post that the TSA will accept Mobile Driver’s Licenses (mDL) at two airports in February of 2022 before adding two additional states in March as part of a pilot program.

According to an event recap from the Secure Technology Alliance, the TSA is planning to support Apple Wallet IDs (mobile driver’s licenses) in two airports in February. If successful, the test will expand to airports in two more states the following month.

Mobile driver’s licenses are gaining traction in at least 30 U.S. states. The progress exemplifies that the transition from physical driver’s licenses is well underway, and the future of identification documents is digital. On the heels of these advancements, the Secure Technology Alliance celebrates the success of its first Mobile Driver’s License (mDL) Workshop, which occurred in conjunction with an American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) and ISO-led regional mDL testing event.

Iowa state officials have launched a pilot project aimed at making digital driver’s licenses available for download sometime in 2022. Testing is underway on mDL compatible devices through December 2021.

Documents signed by states who will support digital IDs in the Apple Wallet reveals states will have to cover the costs of the program, sparking concerns that taxpayers will have the foot the bill.

Remote notarization platforms are exploring how to use mobile IDs to identify signers for remote online notarization (RON) in select states. Mobile ID technology experts assure Notaries that mobile IDs have multiple security features to confirm their authenticity.

Floridians will be able to download their digital driver’s license starting next month, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. It will be available through the Florida Smart-ID app, which will go live in mid-November on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
