The Canadian government has quietly announced plans to pursue a digital ID program at the national level. The move aims to make services more convenient to access through a federal Digital Identity Program, integrated with pre-existing provincial platforms.

In 2020, the Utah legislature passed measures to begin a pilot program for mobile driver’s licenses. Two years later, one of the country’s largest credit unions announced it will immediately begin accepting mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) as a valid form of identification.

America First Credit Union ($17 billion in assets, 1.2 million members) in Riverdale, Utah said all of its 121 branches in Utah and Arizona will accept mDLs for ID verification for all banking transactions.

A year-long mobile driver’s license pilot program is now almost at the finish line. Utah residents could see mDL’s fully launch in a few weeks, according to the Director of the Utah Driver License Division. Officials are working with relying parties that would utilize ID verification along with businesses that would accept the mobile ID including retail, banking and more.

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), American Airlines AAdvantage® members who are enrolled in TSA PreCheck may choose to use their American Airlines Mobile ID at select TSA PreCheck checkpoints to have their identity verified. There are also plans to deploy at select TSA PreCheck checkpoints at Miami International Airport (MIA), Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), and Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA) later this year.

Starting with iOS 16, users will be able to present mobile ID cards stored in the Wallet app in select apps that require identity or age verification. Apple will provide users with an overview of information being collected by the app, and indicate if the data will be stored, and for how long. The user will be required to authorize with Face ID or Touch ID in order for the ID card to be presented to the app.

The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) has announced that the Maryland Mobile ID is not compatible with Apple Wallet. This provides Marylanders with an easy, fast, and secure, digital version of their MDOT MVA-issued driver’s license or state ID card.

Google Wallet is set to be available sometime in the summer of 2022 on a variety of Android devices. The new version of Google Wallet will include support for digital IDs, including digital driver’s licenses. However, support will vary depending on state and other local legislation.

California’s Department of Motor Vehicles is planning to test mobile driver’s licenses or digital IDs. It uses the biometric capabilities of your smartphone (something you are) to tie your mobile driver’s license or ID to your device (something you have).
