The mobile driver’s license (mDL) ecosystem is expanding rapidly. In the U.S., the secure, cryptographically protected digital identity credential is available in six states, representing more than 66 million people. Implementation efforts are also underway in 26 additional states. In response, the Secure Technology Alliance’s Identity and Access Forum has launched the industry’s first mDL use case template. The free resource will guide relying parties (RPs), including law enforcement, retailers, government agencies, and enterprises, as they prepare to accept mDLs for ID verification and authentication.

Efforts are underway to allow New Jersey residents to carry an electronic version of their driver’s license if they want one. But it could be a while before that becomes reality.

Arizona residents have a new option for keeping a digital version of their driver’s license or state identification card on their cell phones.

The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today announced that the Colorado ID can be added to Google Wallet, providing an easy, fast and secure digital version of their state-issued driver license or ID card.

More than 1.5 million state residents now have access to their mobile driver’s license. California residents can now upload their driver’s license to their smartphone and take part in the state’s Mobile Driver’s License pilot program.
